Your first book
A book begins with a page you can write.
You do not need the whole story figured out. Give a character something to want, put one obstacle in the way and write the moment they have to act.
Find the story inside the idea.
A setting is a place to begin. A story starts when someone has a reason to move through it. Write one sentence about a character, what they want and the cost of getting it. Then choose a scene small enough to finish today.
Build a plan that leaves room for discovery.
Keep a short list of turning points beside the draft. Add research, unresolved questions and character notes without making each new thought a reason to stop writing. A useful outline tells you what to try next; it does not have to predict every chapter.
Make revision a separate job.
Read once for the story, then for the scene, then for the sentence. A beautiful paragraph cannot fix a missing decision. Our worked example shows how changing a small detail can alter a character’s motive and the direction of an opening.
