Bring your writing

Keep the meaning, not just the words.

Moving a story means carrying its structure, formatting and important decisions with it. Use this checklist to review a representative import. Format coverage and preservation levels must be confirmed for the specific build you use.

Keep the original. Compare a small sample.

Make a separate copy before importing. Choose a sample with the difficult parts: scene headings, a page break, a note, a chapter boundary or unusual formatting. Compare the imported project with that source before relying on the result.

Final Draft and Fountain

For FDX, inspect screenplay elements, character assignments, parentheticals, transitions, scene numbers, revisions, locked-page behavior and notes. Companion features such as boards and cards need their own verification; opening the script text does not prove they were retained. With Fountain, check how the plain-text notation was interpreted.

Word, RTF and plain text

For DOCX and RTF, inspect paragraph styles, headings, emphasis, lists, scene breaks and any notes you need. Plain text does not carry the same formatting information as a styled document. Decide whether the import is intended to preserve a finished layout or create an editable manuscript structure.

PDF and EPUB

Compare reading order, chapter boundaries, punctuation and paragraph joins. A visual page is not proof of recoverable editing structure. Image-only PDF pages need text recognition before their words can be edited; verify the specific build’s behavior rather than assuming that OCR is included.

Scrivener projects and compiled exports

A native Scrivener project and a compiled manuscript contain different information. Review the binder structure, research, notes, labels and metadata you need to carry forward, then check whether the selected import route retains them. A compiled export should not be treated as a complete replacement for the original project.

Report what changed with a small example.

Tell support the source app and version, the file format, the expected result and what was missing or changed. Begin with a description or a redacted screenshot. Do not send an entire unpublished manuscript through the website form.
